San Juan River Protection Work Group
The San Juan River Protection Work Group will hold a field trip on July 22, 2010 in order to visit sites of interest and potential protection on the East and West Forks of the San Juan River. One such site is the intake for the Snowball Water Treatment Plant, which services the Town of Pagosa Springs and surrounding areas.

Anyone with an interest in identifying and protecting these river corridors is invited to attend the workgroup meetings. The meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each month, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ross Aragon Community Center.
Over the course of the next several months, the workgroup will explore alternative protection mechanisms in a manner similar to the process for the Hermosa Creek north of Durango. The objective is to reach a consensus and present recommendations to the US Forest Service for the management of these river corridors, which may serve as an alternative to a Wild and Scenic designation. The interests represented include recreation, wildlife, fisheries, water development, environmental groups, oil and gas, watershed protection, viewshed protection, private property rights and leaseholder rights.
Another workgroup will be formed at a later date to discuss the Middle and East Fork of the Piedra River.
